What we do

Information and awareness work

At LINK Tromsø, we use the term "support groups" for what are often called self-help groups. We aim to...
  • spread information about what a support group is and how it works.
  • share knowledge about the benefits of support groups and who they are suitable for.
  • increase understanding of the structure, principles, and tools that enable groups to manage themselves in a safe and supportive way.
  • challenge myths and misconceptions about joining a support group.
  • show how support groups contribute to a more open, caring, and tolerant society.

Recruitment and training of volunteers

Our facilitators are volunteers, and we therefore prioritise...
  • recruiting, training, and following up with volunteers who can carry out introductory conversations with interested participants, and initiate and follow up with support groups.
  • organising gatherings where volunteers can practise initiating and guiding groups

Starting, facilitating and following up support groups

We offer a free, low-threshold service that should be accessible and easy to join. Our tasks therefore include...

  • receiving and responding to enquiries from people interested in joining a group.
  • conducting individual introductory conversations to clarify needs and expectations.
  • referring people to other services if a support group is not the appropriate option.
  • arranging free meeting spaces for a group's first meeting, which the group then books independently afterwards.
  • attending 1–3 meetings to help the group start up in a safe and supportive way.
  • visiting the group again after they have met on their own 3–5 times.
  • following up with the group and participants as needed.

Collaboration and Network Building

We believe that good mental health support depends on open communication between different services and organisations. We therefore aim to...

  • set up regular meetings with municipal low-threshold services, specialist health services, and other organisations to explore how we can best work together.
  • invite local actors involved in self-help work to share experiences, exchange knowledge, and explore opportunities for collaboration across sectors.
  • initiate, and coordinate, an intermunicipal self-help network.
  • collaborate with LINK centres in Oslo, Bergen, Trondheim, and Porsgrunn.

In this video, our general manager, Lizett, talks more about our work in the community and why self-help groups are an important and forward-looking service. (Currently only available in Norwegian)
